This year, the Storymoja Festival Program includes a wonderful and exciting addition, a spelling challenge for children 8 – 13 years of age. The challenge is meant to encourage reading, creativity and innovation. Enroll your little reading champion and come cheer for him or her! Register Here.

The Storymoja Festival is an annual 5 – day celebration of books, arts, performance and culture. Dubbed the “biggest book party in East and Central Africa”, the festival aims to promote a stronger reading culture and nurture creativity using activities that will stimulate critical & creative thinking as well as educate and entertain. This year, the festival takes place from 27th September – 1st October 2017 at the Nairobi National Museum.

The Storymoja Festival Spelling Contest, organized with other partners is one of these activities. Scheduled for Saturday 30th September,the Spelling Contest is open to children aged between 8 – 13 years and aims to promote reading for pleasure, self-confidence and cultivate public speaking skills among the participants.

Given that the activity is taking place within the Storymoja Festival, these are the requirements:

– We will share a list of storybooks titles that (some of) the words to be spelled in the contest will be extracted from. Please encourage them to read the book (s) slotted for their age group before the contest.

The Books to be read are:

1. The Higher you go by Clifford Oluoch (8 – 10 years)
2. The Forever Tree by Wangari Grace (8 – 10 years)
3. It looks like a Goat by Pasomi Mucha (11 – 13 years)
4. Wangari Maathai: Mother of Trees by Kinyanjui Kombani (11-13 years)

– The contest takes place on September 30th from 9:00am at the Museum. On the day, please accompany her to the activity. You will be required to purchase a (subsidized) festival ticket at 500/- which allows you to access not just the Spelling Bee area but also all the other activities of the day at the festival. Being a contestant, the children will get free entry. (This ticket will be available at checkin)

Parents to share the following details:
– Parent/Guardian full names
– Parent/Guardian Email Address
– Parent/Guardian Phone number
– Full Names of the child(ren)
– their ages
– School and class.

This is an oral competition where words are pronounced to the competitors who are in turn expected to respond within the allocated time. The pupils are categorized according to their age groups.

5.How are the winners recognized?

The winner in each age category will receive a trophy, a gift pack and a certificate.

All other contestants will also receive certificates of participation.

6.Does the spelling bee have different categories? What are they?

The categories are based on age. They are;

  • 8/9 years
  • 10/11 years and
  • 12/13 years

8.When is the deadline for registration?

The deadline for registration is Friday 15th September,2017 at 5.00pm.

All confirmed contestants will be notified by email, text message or telephone at the close of registration.

10.How much is the registration fee and what is the payment mode?

Registration for contestants is by purchase of the two storybooks in their age category. The parent or guardian confirms registration by buying an entry ticket to the event in advance (by 20th September) at Kshs. 500/ This can be done through the above payment modes. Additional tickets for other siblings and friends can be purchased on the day.

11.If I withdraw my children from the competition, can my registration fee be refunded?

No, the registration fee is nonrefundable.

12.Where do I find material for the contest?

You can buy the books at TBC Kijabe Street and Sarit Centre branches. You can also order online through their website and they will deliver to a branch of your choice.

13.What do I need to bring to the contest on the day of the event?
